There are many activities available to cadets outside of the classroom, all of which are voluntary and do not affect the cadets' report card grade. However, to get the full benefit from the JROTC program, cadets are encouraged to participate. A point system enables cadets to work toward junior varsity and varsity letters. Following are some of these activities.

Lock-In
Lock-In is held in January at the high school for JROTC cadets and their guests and interested 8th graders. Activities include basketball, touch football, volleyball, swimming, dancing, video games, and movies.

Military Ball
Military Ball is an annual ball that includes dinner, dancing, and selection of a ball court, king, and queen.

Award Ceremonies
We have a midyear ceremony and an end-of-year banquet when cadets receive recognition for their accomplishments.

MSU Sports Day
This annual athletic and drill competition is sponsored by the MSU Senior AFROTC for Michigan AFJROTC units.

Marching
The following teams represent GCHS in the schools, community and at competitions in Michigan and Ohio:

Drill - We have 1st year, veteran, and exhibition teams.

Color Guard - Several color guards take turns presenting the flag at local ceremonies as well as compete in drill meets.

Rifle - This is a new team this year. The Rifle Team performs basic drill while carrying our demilitarized (non-firing) M1 rifles.

Service
A significant part of JROTC is providing service to the school and community.

Needy Family - A citywide program to help area families. Cadets collect money to buy groceries and help deliver food baskets during the holiday season.

Santa Land - Cadets assist physically and mentally challenged people in their visit to Santa at the Log Cabin in City Park and serve them food at the VFW hall.

Adopt-A-Highway - A semiannual cleanup of a portion of Plymouth Road.

Christmas Tree Lighting - Cadets assist with crowd control, programs, and insuring Santa Claus makes a timely appearance at the Garden City Christmas tree lighting.

Flag Pole - Cadets have landscaped the high school flag pole area, which contains a JROTC initiated monument to veterans. Continuing care is our responsibility.

High School - Whenever student assistance is needed at high school functions, cadets are frequently asked to assist.
