Wild Wild West |

Will Smith is back in the theater hoping for more 4th of July boxoffice magic. His past successes include Independence Day and Men in Black. In this time out, Will Smith stars as Jim West, the 1800's version of James Bond. This movie is based upon the television series of the same name. Since, I really never watched that show, I can make no comparison. Those who have seen both, tell me the resemblance doesn't go far beyond the title, so relax and stop with the comparisons. Jim West teams with another agent (Kevin Kline) and is under orders by President Theodore Roosevelt to thwart the evil Dr. Lovelace (Kenneth Branagh) from taking over the United States. I wasn't expecting very much from this movie so I was mildly surprised. It managed to hold my interest throughout with the few action sequences, the interesting gadgetry, and the humor. This movie is designed to appeal to all comers so it fails to deliver spectacularly in any category. It is a decent matinee though. As an added bonus, viewers get a little history refresher with scenes referring to the first transcontinental railroad, the Lousiana Purchase, and more. |
