This is one of those movies which has a lot of star power, but not much else. I read this book by Michael Crichton many years ago and remembered it to be excellent so I was looking forward to a movie adaptation. Sphere is the story of a diverse group of people recruited to make first contact with a potential alien species in a spacecraft found at the bottom of the sea. Sounds good huh? It is good for about the first half, then it goes down hill. I won't spoil any of the surprises. Actually, I should say I won't surprise you with any of the disappointments. While the cast (Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel Jackson, Peter Coyote) is strong the story is weak -- I don't remember the book being like this -- I'll have to reread it. The special effects aren't even that great either. This movie tried to deliver on the excitement of the unknown. See "Contact" for this. The movie also tried to create suspense in not knowing who is telling the truth. See "The Thing" for that. "Sphere" might have been better if released ten years ago (or not at all). |
