The Siege

The Siege stars Denzel Washington as Anthony 'Hubb' Hubbard, an FBI agent, in charge of New York City counter-terrorism. The US Government capture of the suspected mastermind behind the Khobar Towers bombing sets off his followers to plan a string of bombings in NYC unless he is released. Annette Bening plays a CIA agent who comes to the aid of Denzel while at the same time keeping her full knowledge of the bombings a secret. Bruce Willis is the Army General in command of the troops brought in to police the city after the President believes the FBI cannot contain the problem and bring the terrorists to justice.

I went into this movie expecting to be scared about the possibility of wide spread terrorism in US cities. However, the story here failed in many are to hold my belief. Moreover, the majority of the drama was wasted on silly inter-agency rivalries. The autonomous operation of the CIA agent despite the obvious information she was keeping was ridiculous.

So what was good? There were some great scenes which by themselves were quite suspenseful. Denzel was great. The others weren't really given a chance.

Many people will badmouth this movie because it stereotypes Arabs as terrorists. No, the movie does not. The actions taken by the public and their leadership in this movie do. This movie recognizes that people associate Arabs with terrorism and the problem this poses in an effort to heighten awareness of this stereotype.
