Saving Private Ryan |

This is a touch movie to rate. Expectations were sky-high. You start with a top notch director in Steven Spielberg and add more Academy Award winners in Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. Add what appears to be a compelling true story about a soldier in WWII who must be found and saved from action after all of his brothers are already killed in the war. The end result is something that just fell short of the mark. Tom Hanks is given the mission to find Private Ryan (Matt Damon). Pvt Ryan parachuted behind enemy lines and has not been located. We follow Tom and his troops from the morning of D-Day through the French countryside as they search for Pvt Ryan. The D-Day scene is without a doubt the most graphic, reportedly realistic, glimpse of what happened during the invasion of Normandy. While powerful in and of itself, it has little to do with Pvt Ryan. We don't get to see how Pvt Ryan got lost -- we don't even hear about him until days after D-Day. Without spoiling two much, I'll just say that the movie is riddled with little unnecessary scenes, odd casting choices, and inconsequential actions. A little less of these imperfections and we would have had a toothy grin for this one. |
