Chow Yun Fat. Never heard of him? If you haven't then you're not into Hong Kong Cinema or more specifically, Hong Kong action movies. Chow Yun Fat is the John Wayne of these movies in Asia thanks to a string of movies by John Woo. These action movies are modern-day westerns replete with gunplay and bloodshed. "The Replacement Killers" is Chow Yun Fat's first shot at the American market. Since HK is now under control of China, many of their stars have moved westward to include Jackie Chan. In this movie, Chow Yun Fat plays an assasin who refuses to perform a hit and then must evade those who hired him. In the process he joins with Mira Sorvino. The title is not very appropriate. The replacement killers refer to the thugs who come to perform the hit Chow Yun Fat refused to perform. Hey, they aren't the stars are they? The movie has the usually trademark John Woo action sequences, two fisted guns firing, slow-mo violence. However, the addition of Mira Sorvino, presumably to get better name recognition, is pointless. If you have never seen a HK-style action flick , and you like action, check it out. If you've seen classics like "Hardboiled" or "The Killer" you'll be a bit disappointed. Go see "Face-Off" instead. |
