Pleasantville is a fantasy in which a brother (Tobey Maguire) and sister (Reese Witherspoon) from the 1990s are transported into the setting of a popular television show from the 1950s. Their efforts to return home take a backseat as they become more and more immersed in their new (or old) surroundings. This movie has an excellent blend of humor, nostalgia, and a good message. The story is carried out brilliantly with superb acting (Jeff Daniels, Joan Allen, William H. Macy, J.T. Walsh and the aforementioned Maguire and Witherspoon), a memorable soundtrack, and fantastic visuals. On the downside, I felt the strong message was dilluted a bit with a weak attempt to draw parallels to slavery. Also, the manner in which the brother and sister are placed in this TV show is a little silly -- perhaps it has to be? Those two complaints aside, this is only second to The Truman Show for the best movie I've seen this year. |
