Jackie
Brown is the long awaited follow-up to Quentin Tarentino's
"Pulp Fiction". I would have waited a little longer. Yes,
this is a solid movie, but I would rather watch PF for the
hundredth time.
In the title role, Pam Grier is Jackie Brown, a down on her
luck flight attendant who gets involved in a scheme to move
illegal gun money using her convenient job in the airlines.
Samuel L. Jackson is the gun runner, Robert De Niro is his
partner in crime, and Robert Forster is a bail bondsmen who
gets involved with the scheme and maybe with Jackie. Don't
forget Michael Keaton as the cop trying to figure out what's
really going on.
The performances are solid, rock -solid. The story starts
off too slow however. There are quite a few little scenes
which help the movie drag along with the attempt at creating
something memorable a la PF. Too bad, Tarentino can't outdo
himself. The story is strong as are the performances, but
there's nothing outstanding here except for maybe the subtle
excellence of Forster's portrayal of the bail bondsman. Wait
for the rental.
