Star Trek: Insurrection |

I don't call myself a "Trekkie" or a "Trekker" or whatever they call themselves. I never got hooked on Star Trek the Next Generation though I must have seen a great many of the episodes over the years. I do enjoy and look forward to one of the other spin-offs, Voyager. Seeing this latest Star Trek movie offering reminded me why I enjoy Voyager and pass on the Next Generation. In Insurrection, a planet is under observation by Star Fleet and the Son'a. This planet is home to 600 people known as the Bak'u who live a rural and simple life. Star Fleet and the Son'a have a shared interest in this planet, and they are planning something big. Data is on loan to the project, but he malfunctions and throws a wrench in the works. Now the Enterprise is brought in to capture Data and figure out what is so intriguing about this planet. While there were some interesting moral dilemmas presented here, the story lacked the substance to support a full-length feature. Also, this movie lacked any real seriousness. The movie is chock-full of the silly antics of the cast. If you're a true diehard of this cast then you might be more inclined to laugh. I think there were a few in the audience. Even the seriousness of the story was lost on me since I really didn't think the bad guys were all that bad. Don't the needs of the many outweigh those of the few in some circumstances? There were some grey areas when it came to the motivations of the characters, and therefore, I too, was left in the middle. The best part of the night at the movies was the Star Wars trailer. It received a round of applause. Now that's Science Fiction! |
