"Good Will Hunting" is about a young man, Will Hunting (Matt Damon), who is an untapped genius relegated to sweeping up after the students at MIT. After being discovered, a host of supporters try to get Will to realize his potential. Robin Williams is ultimately taked with this responsibility. The story is great. The acting is wonderful. There were a few elements of the story which prevented this movie from being truly wonderful. First off, in order to feel for the character, you had to want him to succeed. After a serious of setbacks, I didn't care if he got hit by a bus. Also, I had hoped for a stronger relationship to be built between Will and Robin's character -- at one point it seemed Robin's character was gone from the movie. The surface was only scratched here. Also the relationship between Will and his long-time friend could have been ten times stronger. Instead, a wonderful scene between the two of them falls short do to insufficient building. These knocks keep this great movie from being an excellent one. If you can stay with this hard-luck genius, you're in for quite a treat. |
