"The
Full Monty" refers to a male striptease where all is
revealed. In Sheffield, England, the closure of the steel
mills has left many workers without work. Starved for
employment these men get an idea to make money on a town
which is starved for entertainment. After seeing the
potential profitability of a visiting male revue, they
decide they too can shake their moneymakers for the
neighborhood women. We follow their efforts to develop their
routine and promote the event.
A cast of unknowns (to U.S. audiences anyway) do a good job
getting sympathy. They have no jobs, they have no talent,
and most importantly they don't have the typical physical
attributes required of male dancers. Throughout the movie I
tried to believe that they would actually go through with
such nonsense and produce a fantastic show worthy of all the
effort and embarrassment. The final result was good but not
spectacular -- barely worth the wait. There was a message I
think, but it wasn't hit hard enough in my opinion. That is,
attitude, style, and enthusiasm is what make the women go
wild. These older, fatter, and less coordinated male
strippers learned this. Of course throwing in a "Full Monty"
doesn't hurt.
