Deep Impact

Yet another disaster flick! This must be the year of the giant asteroid like last year was the year of the volcano. Deep Impact preempts Armageddon by a few months to allow moviegoes to witness the what would happen if we learned tomorrow that a giant asteroid was hurtling toward the Earth threatening life as we know it.

The movie focuses on a few characters and how the asteroid will impact their lives. Tea Leoni, a Washington DC reporter, stumbles on the story. Elijah Wood, a high school student, makes the discovery. Robert Duvall, a retired astronaut, must lead a team of specialists into space to intercept and destory the approaching asteroid. By the way, Morgan Freeman stars as the President.

Unlike other big budget action films, there is no big action in this film except for a few spectacular scenes at the end. Instead we follow the characters and suffer their decisions and consequences along with them. This movie is about the human spirit and not the special effect. I was pleasantly surprised with Deep Impact.
