Rural Montana is the setting for this black comedy in which Clay Birdwell (Joaquin Phoenix) finds himself in a bind. It all begins when his best friend commits suicide after learning Clay is sleeping with his wife. The suicide is planned so that it appears Clay pulled the trigger. This death is the first of many which put clay squarely in the suspect category despite his innocence. The other bodies start popping up around the time we're introduced to Lester Long (Vince Vaughn) who becomes quick friends with Clay. Who is really committing the murders? Will Lester prove his innocence? This is a solid movie with some fine acting on the part of Phoenix and Vaughn. Janeane Garafalo does a fine job as the FBI agent assigned to investigate the murders. I only wish I had cared more about the Clay character so I had a stake in whether or not the real murdered was unveiled. Otherwise, it's a fine story with some interesting twists. It doesn't break any new ground though. |
