A Bug's Life

A Bug's Life is the second big computer-animated movie about insects to come at us this year. Antz came first, but which is better? They beg to be compared.

A Bug's Life is a story about a small island in a dry creek bed which is home to a colony of ants. It seems these ants are slave labor for the evil grasshoppers. The ants must harvest food for the grasshoppers or face dire consequences. One of the ants, Flik (voice by Dave Foley), causes a catastrophe threatening the season's harvest. It is up to Flik to seek help for the doomed colony. As in Antz, A Bug's Life is packed with famous voices: Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Drefus, Phyllis Diller, David Hyde Pierce, Jonathan Harris, Madeline Kahn, and John Ratzenberger to name a few.

A Bug's Life is a solid movie with the usual, wonderful computer animation. The movie will appeal to all, but mainly to children. Antz was a bit darker and more sinister than Bug's. I must say I expected too much in this movie so I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. Also, the theater where I saw this played the volume and unacceptably high levels. There was no contrast, and this became tiresome. Kids will be delighted. Adults will be mildly amused.
