Austin Powers 2 - The Spy Who Shagged Me

Yeah baby! That's what I thought upon first seeing the trailer for the follow-up to Mike Myers' very successful 1997 "Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery". That movie was very entertaining. After just seeing the sequel to that hit, I know why it was so.

"Austin Powers 2 - The Spy Who Shagged Me" begins with the return of Dr. Evil who devises a plan to steal Austin's "mojo" and render him powerless. Austin has to return to the Sixties to set things straight. A few new characters are introduced along the way: Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), Minnie-me (A 1/8 size Dr. Evil), and Fat Bastard (also played by MM).

Everything that made the first movie funny is thrown right back at you this time around. Except this time, it's no longer fresh and hence, it's no longer funny. Minnie-me had some potential, but too much screen time and zero dialogue for the character did him in. Austin and Dr. Evil just plodded along saying the same lines and doing the same stunts. The only bright spot in the lineup was Shagwell. She was the only reason I didn't exit the theater early. Fat Bastard was both, and I found the combination disgusting -- not funny disgusting.

I would hope this marks the end of Austin Powers movies. However, the large group of pre-teen girls seated near me may have something to say about that. They seemed to have a good time. Ahh, to be thirteen again.
