Get ready for two computer animated adventures where insects are the starts. "Antz" beat the release of "A Bug's Life" by a couple of months." Rumor has it that this one was a rush job to do just that -- beat the other to the theaters. I went in looking for signs of a this rush job to find none. "Antz" is the story of an ant named "Z" hence the z in the plural perhaps. Z is given the voice of Woody Allen. While I'm growing bored with the antics of Woody, the cartoon setting seems fiting for his personality. Z finds himself in an ant colony which is taught not to question authority and work tirelessly toward suspect goals. I used the word cartoon, but don't take that to mean this is geared toward children. While this movie will most certainly draw a large younger audience, much of the dialogue will be lost on them. The cast of voices is first class all the way. Adding to Woody Allen, we have Sharon Stone as the princess (object of Z's affections), Sylvestor Stallone (Z's warrior friend), Gene Hackman (the dictator general), Christopher Walken (the general's right-hand man), Jennifer Lopez (Z's coworker), and Anne Bancroft as the Queen. There's also a great cameo by Danny Glover as Z's brother is arms. The voices are so well choregraphed to the animated faces bringing even more life to the vivid graphics. Oh the graphics! Each scene is a work of art -- in motion! I marveled at the detail woven into each and every object. The story is simple enough -- a unlikely hero is called upon to save the colony while discovering his own purpose. The ant colony setting keeps this one fresh and exciting. The meshing of these distinctive voices with amazing animation has produced a winner. |
