This
steel-stringed acoustic was my first guitar. I had wanted to
teach myself to play ever since college where my roommate,
Mark, a guitarist, interested me in the guitar. I chose the
Alvarez because I found it in a local music shop as part of
a beginner's kit. It included everything you need to start
out with: picks, a tuner, strap, bag, polish, extra strings,
and great sounding guitar for around $200. I considered this
to be a minimal investment to see if my new hobby would
stick. It has.

Almost any
guitarist will tell you to begin on an acoustic and forego
an electric until you've mastered the "proper" technique. I
can't say I mastered anything before I broke down and
purchased this beauty. It's a signature Joe Satriani model
JS-100 in transparent red. It is a sight to behold. I'm not
worthy to play this, but I'm working at it. I plug into a
Crate GFX-30 amp to wake the neighbors.

Since my
little hobby quickly became a legitimate addiction, I needed
a way to satisfy my cravings on the road. This Martin
Backpacker provided the relief I needed. This great little
guitar is perfect for travelling. I have already taken it on
many trips -- including a trip to Japan. For about $150, you
can't go wrong. It comes complete with a great little
carrying case.

At the low
end of the Ovation line, there is the Celebrity series of
guitars. This shallow body acoustic-electric isn't your
ordinary guitar. The unique design makes it a pleasure to
play. Robert Fripp, guitarist of King Crimson, swears by
these and I understand why. I thought about making this my
first guitar, but I held off. No more waiting. Mine is
actually black like Bob's.

I have the
Martin Backpacker for the road, but as nice as it is, it's
hard to really jam with it. Enter the Fernandes Nomad
Deluxe. This little gem has an amp, speaker, and 24-effects
processor built into the body! Pop a 9-Volt battery in, and
you're good to go!
